EXPOSED AGGREGATE is a wonderful way to add some colour and texture with a uniform effect. Exposed aggregate is a popular choice for driveways, patios, sidewalks, and pool decks due to its durability, slip resistance, and natural, high-end appearance. The aggregates can vary in color, size, and texture, offering a wide range of customization options for a unique, custom finish.

Exposed aggregate provides a deceptively smooth finish, but with the more earthy texture of gravel. It is a decorative concrete finish where the top layer of concrete is removed or “exposed” to reveal the natural texture and colour of the aggregates (such as stones, pebbles, or gravel) embedded inside the concrete. This technique enhances the surface’s appearance, creating a more textured, rough finish that can be both aesthetically appealing and slip-resistant.

The process of achieving an exposed aggregate finish typically involves:

  • Pouring concrete: The concrete is poured as usual, with the desired mix of aggregates (like river rock, quartz, or granite) blended into it.
  • Surface treatment: Once the concrete is poured and begins to set, a special chemical retardant is applied to the surface to slow down the curing of the top layer.
  • Exposing the aggregate: After the concrete has set, but before it fully cures, the surface is scrubbed or washed with water, which removes the top layer of cement paste, exposing the aggregates underneath.
  • Sealing: A sealant is often applied afterward to protect the exposed surface and enhance its appearance.
